My favorite peace of furniture next to my grandmother's china cabinet is my little shaker roll top desk. It is well made, compact, and it suits me. Despite my preference for simplicity I can not help but admire this secretary cabinet. It is a work of art and I think you'll appreciate it too. Still though, I am not sure if it would inspire me to write or just overwhelm me. The kid in me thinks it would make for an excellent treasure hunt. What do you think?

It's finished! I have moved my things into my new desk and I am tickled pink. I feel so much more organized than I did just two hours ago...what a relief! To celebrate, I bought myself my own scissors that will live in the upper left drawer. I should have purchased a chain to attach it with. The pictures were taken on my cell phone because my camera is still AWOL and a considerable amount of beauty is lost so please use your rose colored glasses for viewing. I have plans for the cubby holes. Until now my cards have been living in an old but very cool picnic basket that I found at the thrift store years ago. Wouldn't you know it, but when I pulled things out to move them to their new home I found a stash of note cards buried at the bottom and forgotten about; what a happy surprise. You can see them in the top center. Among the cards are some Crane & Co. notes which are a delight to use because they feel so luxurious. When I started focusing on writing letters my practice of sending short notes slipped away. This is something I have been meaning to return to.
As you can imagine, I am floating on cloud nine. Mr. Duffy is likely tiring of my constant chattering about how wonderful his gift is but he will have to bear with me for a little longer. I sit down now at my dining room table to write letters. One will go to Massachusetts, the other to Poland. I hope that this is the last time I will write at this table. The desk is stained and Mr. Duffy is buying varnish today. I am told it will need two coats. Lord willing, by Monday both coats will be applied and dried and he can bring in my new organizing/writing space. Unfortunately, I leave town on Tuesday and will be torn away from my new love for a few days but it is well known that distance makes the heart grow fonder.
I am enjoying staining my desk. Mr. Duffy did the sanding and most of the staining, now I'm finishing up. I am very much looking forward to bringing it into the house (it's living in the patio at present) and moving my things into it. I am full of optimism, actually. This is the year I am determined to organize myself and having a permanent home for my things will certainly help...surely it must. No more muddle-headedness for me. I mean it this time! Well, back to work now. I must make progress :o)
I continue to receive lovely letters in the mail and have some interesting conversations in the works. All mail conversation interests me and I enjoy the variety of conversations but I find that the liveliest conversation comes from disagreements. Disagreement is enjoyable so long as it remains cordial. I'm not exactly sure why this is. Why should sparring be fun? Perhaps because it's not the usual course of things, not for me anyway. Most people in my set of friends share my views and attitudes for the most part; perhaps that's why we wound up in the same circles. Add to that a polite avoidance of issues that might bring us into conflict and there's very little to argue about. That can be a little dull sometimes, I admit. Perhaps the desire to avoid conflict is why women talk so much of recipes and current sales (hmmm). So, when a philosophical argument comes along it's a fun ride...so long as it remains cordial, of course. I'd like to show you a couple fun enclosures I received recently. Finally, my happy news for the week is that my desk has arrived earlier than expected. It is beautiful and needs finishing. Mr. Duffy has given the young Mr. Duffys the task of sanding. Hopefully this weekend it will be ready for staining. I can't wait!
I am very, extremely, super excited. Yesterday when Mr. Duffy came home from work he informed me he ordered a desk for me. I won't have it until March because it's being made in Pennsylvania by Woodcraft Industries. It will be a maple roll top desk. I think I will stain it to match our bookshelves. Getting and staying organized will be ever so much easier with a desk of my own. This is nicer than anything I would ever buy for myself. Thank you, Mr. Duffy! XOXO
