"I've been writing an ongoing letter to my children since they were born, full of recollections of their childhoods. I've filled two journals. It's a great thing to do as a mother - you forget a lot as you go along, but reading over what you've written brings all the memories back." Writing letters to my children from birth is something I wish I had done. I have written letters to my children but not as many as I want them to have; not nearly as many. Tory Burch has offered me a good reminder of an important deed I must not leave undone. As I write this the thought comes to me of letter journals; of starting a journal for each child and filling it with letters addressed to them. A journal letter can grow over the years and by the time it is finished they will be old enough to appreciate the value of the gift. Yes, I like this idea; I like it very much.

![]() "This at least should be a rule through the letter-writing world: that no angry letter be posted till four-and-twenty hours will have elapsed since it was written." And may I add the same applies to emails, perhaps even more so. A letter has the benefit of slowing us down allowing us think about what we are saying. An email does not for it can be tapped out almost as quickly as it can be sent. ![]() "If doubtful whether to end with 'yours faithfully,' or 'yours truly,' or 'yours most truly,' &c. (there are at least a dozen varieties, before you reach 'yours affectionately'), refer to your correspondent's last letter, and make your winding-up at least as friendly as his: in fact, even if a shade more friendly, it will do no harm!" |
